How long will it take the dopamine receptors to heal?

Postby fayne » Wed Dec 16, 2009 7:36 pm

My mom was abusing painkkillers for a year, and xanax for roughly a year before that. Before, and during this time, she had felt nothing.
No lift or haqppiness from anything,at all. There was virtually no dopamine being released.

My question is,after being completely sober, roughly how long does it take for the dopamine receptors to begin to heal from drugs abuse?
I know that certain drugs like Meth and Crack will do more damage to them and serotonin levels, but these are just painkillers.

Any ideas? please serious answers only =)

Thanks alot

Six weeks in a clinical situation, but that is with stringent controls.

well xanax is a benzodiazepine, and that ususally affects GABA, and or serotonin levals.
and so when the person keeps on taking the drug, the brain makes the adjustment and reduces its own production of neurotransmitters, (because the drug does it.)

However, for you question, if they stop taking the drug their supply of neurotransmitters will be low for some time, producing symptoms of withdrawl, and this continues until the brain resumes it's normal production of neurotransmitters... thers not a definate time, but it may take a few weeks or months.
hope i've helped :)
