At the granite quarry, Dominique is deeply attracted to the red-headed worker who stares at her insolently. She pursues him aggressively, but resists him in the moment of her triumph. Given that Dominique is eager to make love to Roark, why does she physically resist? Ayn Rand once stated regarding this scene that, if it is rape, “ then it is rape by engraved invitation.” What does she mean? Is this actually rape, i.e., is Dominique an unwilling victim?

The point of the Fountainhead is self reliance and pride. Dominique will not give in to her desires because she feels that love will make her subservient or weak. But she does lust for Roarke, so the "invitation" is that she wants him, but she refuses him for the reasons above. If you take someone against their will, it is rape. Ayn Rand is questioning the truth of Dominique's willingness by saying that in her heart, Dominique is inviting the attention. By law, that is still rape. By her intentions, the question is less clear.
