What exactly do you need to know?
The movie is about a nun called Maria (Julie Andrews) in Salzburg. It starts with her singing The Hills Are Alive with the Sound of Music in the mountains, which makes her late back to mass. The other nuns - including SIsters Margaretta & Berthe - think Maria is not serious about being a nun.
So the Mother Abbess sends Maria away to be the new governess (nanny) for Baron Von Trapp's seven children - Liesl, Friedrich, Louisa, Brigitta, Kurt, Marta & Gretel. Liesl is the eldest & she is in love with the telegram boy Rolf, who later joins the Nazis.
Gretel is the youngest child - an interesting story from the movie is that there is a scene when Maria takes the children out on a boat in the lake at the house. They had to all fall in, but Kym Karath couldn't swim and so Julie Andrews was supposed to catch her when they fell into the water. But Julie fell off one side of the boat & Kym fell off the other - and nearly drowned as a result!
So back to the story.. The children don't like Maria at first and play tricks on her, like putting a pine cone on her seat at dinner. But one night there is a scary thunderstorm & all the kids run into her room because they are scared. She teaches them a song (My Favourite Things) to help them feel better, and so they start to like her.
The strict Baron has little time for his children and orders them around with a whistle. But Maria believes that children should have fun, so she makes them some play clothes out of old curtains and takes them to the mountains of Salzburg to play, and teaches them to sing.
The Baron then brings home The Baroness and announces to the children that he is going to marry her. But he soon finds himself falling in love with Maria.
Maria is confused, as she is still a nun, so she goes to the Mother Abbess for advice. The MOther Abbess understands Maria's predicament, but gives her her blessing to leave the convent and marry Baron Von Trapp, which she does.
Amidst all of this, the Nazi party is rising to power in Austria and they want to recruit Baron Von Trapp - but he does not want to join the Nazis. So his friend Max Detweiler helps him hatch a plan for him and his family to escape the country.
Max enters the Von Trapps into a music competition and after they have performed, they flee. The Nazi realise they are trying to escape and go after them. The reach Maria's convent, where the Von Trapps are hiding - but the nuns help hide the family and even take parts from the Nazis car so they can't go after them.
So the famiy escape by crossing the borders over the mountain.
This was all based on a true story - and the Von Trapps eventually ended up in America, where the family set up a ski resort in Stowe, Vemont.
Any more questions, let me know - I love the Sound of Music!
